IH 2544 Carb issues

So my International 2544 (1970) has been acting up. Before I did anything to it, it would run fine, then shut off out of nowhere, then
start right back up. It would run for a while, before doing it again.
Then I took the carb off and cleaned it, and added a fuel filter after the fuel bowl. The tank is rusty, and tons of rust gets into the
fuel bowl. Also, the fuel bowl didn't have that little screen in the top. So I put the fuel filter in, but didnt replace the screen yet.
And I mowed corn stalks for 2-3 hours, and it worked fine with the freshly cleaned carb. Then it started acting up, It would only run if I
choked it. I ran this thing for an hour on half choke. So it was either getting too much air, or not enough fuel. When I put the carb
together I used a gasket that I cut out from a sheet. I did not use the gasket sealent. So im thinking maybe there is an Air leak in the
carb?

But the last few days it has been stalling out, and not running for a few minutes, and if you wait 2 minutes, it will run fine for 2
minutes, then conk out again. The tells me the carb is not filling up with fuel fast enough. How do I make that fill up faster? Maybe
its the fuel shut off sellonoid on the bottom of the carb?
 
My thoughts, until the rust issue is corrected, you'll be constantly cleaning the carb and filters.

If that is a gravity flow fuel supply, the inline filter can be enough restriction to cause problems. Might try putting the bowl screen back in, clean out the carb again, test flow some fuel through the line before connecting it to the carb. Catch what comes out of the line, if it's still passing rust, it's going to cause problems.
 
Can I replace the metal tank with a plastic boat fuel tank? Maybe run the boat fuel line out of the top of the tank, and connect the other end to the carb.
 
This tank is very rusty, very very rusty. If you get the rust that's in there out, more will just fall off the side. Im gonna try using
this tank tomorrow. I will use a boat fuel line, with the primer bulb. And I will cut the end off, and hose clamp it to the metal line
coming off the carb.
 
I don't think you will get a proper siphon that way, assuming there is no fuel pump. You could install a bulkhead fitting in the bottom, but a plastic tank, over the engine... Is it worth the chance?

I've heard pros and cons with installing a lining coating in the rusted tank. Never tried it, leary of it though.

Have you checked price and availability of a new aftermarket tank?
 

It seems pretty hard to find the right fuel tanks. They are not new either, which worries me. I noticed that the current fuel bowl is designed for a massie fergison, not an International. The international one seems to let fuel into the bowl faster. Maybe that fuel bowl would help?
 
Power wash the tank out put about a lb of ball bearings or bb's in the tank and plug the outlet. Put the cap on throw it into the back of your truck and drive down every bumpy road you can find or strap it into the center of another tractor wheel and drive around. Once the rust is beaten to dust flush and reinstall.
 
I think rusty tank may be your problem. I have cleaned mine with soapy water, scrap bolts and nuts then used tank kreem coating with good results. just don't use rocks they don't come out very good
