Do hubs have to be pressed into antique wheels?

I had my 1926 VAN Wheel Company wheels powder coated and I had a heck of a time getting the black colored hub (see below) seated back into the cast iron wheel. I basically used an electric impact wrench to force hub in, but it was a real pain and it took hours. I suspect the powder coating made the inner circumference of the wheel tighter to squeeze through.

Question. Was it typical back in the day that hubs had to be pressed into the wheel at a machine shop? It seems like the hub should just drop in and then the bolts hold it in place. I hope I did not tweak the front hub plate.

The I/D should be free of paint as the same for the O/D of the hub.
I have some experience with similar hub installations. I'm inclined to use an INSIDE MIC, as well as an out side MIC.
Let us know what you find is the interference of the two components once you have them cleaned.
