Massey 65 Push Rods

I have a Massey 65 with a Continental G176 engine, The exhaust pushrod on my #1 cylinder has dropped down flush with the top of the head. I can fish it out, but I did not think it could go down that far if the lifter was in place. The engine is not torn down, I just picked up a miss, and lack of compression has led me this far. What am I up against here? Can this be fixed without a tear down? I believe a broken valve spring was the cause of this... The push rod was up against the rocker when I took the valve cover off, but while I was fingering the rocker shaft, the push rod just dropped into the depths. It seems like it does not line up right with the rocker when I pull it up.

Have you pulled out the pushrod and looked at it? Could be bent or broken. Compare it with one of the others, all will be the same length.

I guess it's possible the head could have broken off the lifter, but I've never seen that happen. Look down in there with a flash light, see if the lifter is the same approximate height as the others.

I had the pushrod out, it looks fine, not bent, broken or distorted in any way. If the head were broken off the tappet, where would it go? What is the remedy for that? Has anyone ever fished a lifter out of these engines.

Like Dieseltech said, put the pushrod back in and be sure it's in the lifter. If the lifter is bad, the cam will have to come out, they go in from the bottom.

Thinking the valves have lash caps on the stems. If so, be sure they are in place.
