WD 45 won't shift from neutral

I have a 1954 WD45 that has the following problem:

Starting tractor with foot clutch depressed, will shift into all gears. However, while tractor is running, if foot clutch is depressed and released while tranny is in neutral, the tractor will grind and not shift into any gear.

Also, starting tractor with foot clutch depressed, PTO engages and disengages properly until foot clutch is depressed and released while tranny is in neutral. Then the foot clutch will not disengage PTO.

Everything works fine until the foot clutch is depressed and released in neutral. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If your pushing the pedal down and right away try to shift in gear you have not given the gear time to slow down and stop. Takes a minute or 3 for the gears to stop spinning once they have gotten up to speed.

Ah but your not understanding what is being said. You shift to neutral then let the clutch out and that spins up all the gears in the transmission which are all pretty heavy. Then to push the clutch back down and try to shift but the gears have not slowed down and stopped so you grind when you try to shift. You need to let he gears come to a stop when you shift. When you start it up and hold the clutch down the gears never spin up so you can shift right into gear

We are the original owners of the tractor and this is a new problem. I've waited for 10 minutes and the gears never slow down and stop. I engaged PTO and let the clutch out in neutral, and then put the clutch back in, waited 10 minutes and with a pair of gloves tried to slow down the PTO shaft, and was unable to slow it down at all because it remains engaged with the clutch in. Seems like the clutch doesn't disengage with the tranny in neutral.

My first thought would be clutch needs adjusting [not fully releasing]
Possible broken release finger on pressure plate.
Pilot bearing/bushing toast, causing input shaft to turn.

Ok so you have either a pilot shaft bearing going bad or the throw out bearing going bad or the disk and or pressure plate on it way out.

I idled the tractor down to the point where it would barely stay running, and it will shift out of neutral now. Planning on putting the 90 weight oil back in - having the same problem with my 8N. Thanks for the help.

I had same problem. Pad came off and slid under
another pad, thus doubling the thickness. When the
clutch comes to home position it still grabs hold
