allis chalmers wd45 steering column

I do not remember for sure but it maybe a one way type of thing. Been to many year since I pulled one so if you can not drive it one way they the other way. Plus some time a bit of heat helps

If it"s a tapered pin, and only one end sticks out, that"s the end that was pounded on, so pound on the other end. Can"t remember for sure, but I think they are straight. Technology was not so developed when they were made- I think it was just a snug fit.

(quoted from post at 11:05:29 10/22/15) Can anyone tell me the secret to removing u joint from steering column as I can't get the pin to move. thank you John
Thanks for the replies. I have never seen anything so stubborn before. I had to drill almost the same size of hole through it as the pin. John

I think the problem is the shaft is not solid enough to pound against. I smashed my thumb as bad as I can remember pounding on that thing. An air hammer/chisel was the answer. The original is just a solid, straight pin. I got the pin out, but couldn't get the u-joint off the shaft. I got some help to try to turn the steering wheel and pull at the same time, while I hammered against the u-joint with the air hammer, and it popped right off!

No, I have the engine out getting rebuilt so I had room. I had a hydrualic jack under it to hold it solid. It was just one of those toughies. One of life's little curves. lol
