Allis Chambers G

My sister wanted me to see if I could start a restored G that her late husband had sitting for 3 years so I had a short window of time to look at it and said yes. I asked if she could charge the battery before I got there. I asked if it was a 6v battery and she didn't know but because it was vintage I told her to set the charger to 6v and let it run until I got there (around 3 hours). I looked at the meter and it indicated charging when I got there. The gas was low so I added gas and it poured out a drain in the bottom of the breather tube from the carb. Put a gas can under the carb. to collect it. What's up with this? After awhile I traced the fuel line back to the tank and found the shutoff valve and it appeared to be closed. After opening it the gas appeared to stop draining out the breather. The starter switch was pulled out when I originally looked at it and read the manual and saw this is the starting position. Wouldn't start. Pulled plug to ground - no spark. Need some help. Now wondering if converted to 12v. Don't remember how many cells on battery. I didn't have much time to work on. Any ideas out there? Thanks.

A G was 6 volt positive ground, gas coming out of the air tube shows flooding/stick float needle issue.
Sitting with the start switch pulled most likely means the points are burnt and not firing.

I have PDF's of the owners, shop, and parts books you're welcome to, if wanted just shoot me your email

If it was restored it was 6 volt, but the battery may be too dead to charge properly. You turned the motor with the starter so the battery must have had some charge. I am surprised the battery would charge after 3 years.

If it is restored it should be 6 volt but have been to shows and a lot of them have been converted to 12 volt. A 6 volt will be 3 cells and a 12 will be 6 cells.

Did they have a distributor or a mag? If it's a mag,all the switch does is ground it out,so leaving it in the wrong position wouldn't hurt the points. If a mag is the case, unhook the wire that's hooked to the side of it and eliminate the kill switch altogether to avoid any question of it grounding out.

Even if it's 6 volt, you could jump it off a 12 volt by jumping directly to the starter and not to the battery. Look and see if the ground cable is hooked to positive or negative on the battery. If it's original,it'll be positive ground. As long as the vehicles aren't touching, hook the jumper cables to positive ground on the tractor frame and negative right to the post on the starter.

A G doesn"t have a mag, got to have a charged battery to fire, I"ll be the switch was left on until the battery died. I too doubt if the battery is still good.

I would say switch was off no battery will be charged after setting 3 years and you don't know how old the battery was when he past away.

The battery took a charge and rolled the motor over strongly. It was in a different location than when I last saw it so it must have been run. I asked my sister when it was last run and she thought it was about a year ago.

if starter ran it over fine, you have juice.

hotwire coil from battery.. retry. if nada, clean and regap points, recheck.

FarmallMich,
If gas was pouring out of the U tube below the carb, the fuel valve must have been open when you added fuel (assuming the valve doesn?t leak). That?s the only way fuel could have gotten to the carb. It sounds like the carb float needle was stuck open. Try opening the drain plug at the bottom of the float bowl. That will tell you if fuel is getting to the carb and indicate when the fuel valve is open. After that, running a jumper from the battery hot ( ungrounded side; probably the ? for 6 volt ) to the coil side that does not connect to the distributor should allow you to get a spark when cranking. If not, the points are probably the problem.
Let us know how you do,
