I am overhauling a wisconsin VH4D and it has the babbitt rods on it how do I check to see if I need to take out a shim or just leave them the way they are the bearing surface looks good, also the pistons are not stamped so I guess they are standard and the cylinder wall looks good with no ring groove at the top should I go ahead and replace the pistons ? This engine will be used on a haybaler and run pretty hard.

You need a factory service manual, an older original (ebay) will have full babbitt rods details. (The link below is to a newer one that will answer the rest of your questions.)

Short version with the babbitted rods is that you determine oil clearance with Plastigauge (likely about the same as the specs for the insert rods covered in the manual linked below) and adjust shimming accordingly.

Always:

(1)Use PLASTIGAUGE to check clearance between CRANK JOURNEL and ROD BEARING:
and /or
(2)Use an Outside Mic. to measure CRANKSHAFT JOURNAL DIAM and Inside Mic. to measure I/D of Connecting Rod Bore.
Also
Always use a MIC. to check the CRANKSHAFT Journal as your interested in verifying how ROUND/TRUE the Crank Journal is.
