Wiring problem with IH 584

 About a week ago I tried to start my trusty 584 IH and absolutely nothing happened. It was dead. I figured Battery. I put a fluke on it and crossed 13 volts dc. Next I looked at the starter motor. All the wiring ends were roasted. I figured bad starter. It was only 3 weeks installed. I took it out and carried it to Berger Electric near Salem, Ohio. It tested out all okay. I Then figured it was an ignition switch that did not spring back when I started it the day before and it had run in the on position causing a short. I ordered another switch. While I was doing all this I removed the six post switch from the tractor and looked for some sort of electrical burn. All was very clean. When I got the new switch from YT's I figured it would have an electrical diagram showing the color code for installing the new switch. WRONG. I checked the IH manual and found the schematic for my tractor. I tried to figure it out but still nothing happened. I need to know the color code for the 584 with flat fenders and an external voltage regulator. Also If anyone can suggest why after trying a couple different wiring patterns nothing is happening. Its basically still in the same (nothing spot) where I started.I tried to cross a screw driver from the solenoid to the positive bolt the first day on the starter, nothing. I figure voltage regulator or I need an actual visual of another 584 color wiring of the of the key switch.I have not tried to jump start it with the new end wiring fitting and new switch yet. Any help would be deeply appreciated. I have logs on the ground and need to move them to a dock in my woods. Thanks, Jerry

If jumping the solenoid with a screw driver didn't spin the starter, something is still wrong.

Since the starter checked out, check the voltage at the starter. There may be a bad cable, bad ground, bad
battery... Need to check it under load, as in have the volt meter on the starter post when you jump it with
the screw driver. It is also near impossible to bench test a starter. It may spin freely with no load, but
fail under load. If it did run long enough to fry the cables, chances are the starter is damaged.

Get the starter working first, then go back to the ignition switch. The back if the switch should be marked
as to the function of each terminal. Check the output of the "S" terminal when held in the start position,
should have power. From there the starter circuit will go to the neutral safety switch, then to the starter.

Thanks for the advice on starting my 584 IH. On monday I will have a person come over to the farm and we will try to start the tractor again. I this does not work lacking an accurate color code and contact guide for the ignition switch I will have it towed to the dealer at Guilford Lake. I will keep everyone updated. Thanks again. JH

Either of these help? Probably what you already
have...

Hi
Kinda sounds like when your throwing parts at it mixing wires up and assuming voltage regulator, You are in over your head sorry to say. if you
got 6 terminals and 6 wires you got a heck of a lot of combinations before you guess the right ones. I would say main cables could be your problem
if they are that burned, could be gear safety switch and a few other things before you messed with the wiring. Somebody now has more than one
problem to deal with. Chances are you won't be very popular in their eyes, and they will charge you accordingly on the bill.

I have an old fordson Major here we use to cut grass. It started every day then one day flat out nothing. Dad goofed with it for quite a while
then to heck start towing it as it is diesel. NO this is my tractor fix it. Well guess who fixed it in the end. I found that the main battery cables
had died no current at the main terminals to the solenoid. Made up new cables and it actually fires up better now than the first 15 years I've owned
it. I cut the old cables and the green corrosion ran right the whole length of the wires.. I have seen battery terminals get a hard black coating on
and that doesn't conduct electricity either. you have to near file it off on the battery and cable terminals to get a good clean silver conductive
shine on them to sometimes. Maybe your cables were bad and the high resistance finished them off to There are way to many variables to nail this exactly without being there .

Thanks for the schematic on the starter. Yes, I did have this in the manual but apparently no one has a diagram showing the color of the wires and to which contact they go. I finally took it to the IH Dealer on Rt 172 at Guileford Lake. While they were trying to start it the battery melted. After a lot of money and no free advice. The tractor is back home and working. Even though I was promised a color diagram of the ignition switch none showed up on my receipt. So I got a lot of wiring done and a battery and a solenoid. I got my logs out and to the saw mill so that helped a little.

I do appreciate the good advice and thoughts from all who answered my plea for help. I have a good tractor and that's all that matters.
