1948 B John Deere slack in my steering...need advice

I put a new key in the steering wheel and eliminated the play there, but there is still a lot of slack in my steering. I opened the access door to the worm gear and see that the worm gear turns a lot before the steering gear starts to turn. What will take about 8 inches of steering slack out of my steering wheel?

Take the cover off the top of the gear box and check your bearings. Dig some grease out of it so you can see at the bottom of the up right shaft. should be a off set bushing around that shaft. Take the set screw out and turn the bushing until the slop is out then put the set screw back in and check to see if you have it too tight by turning the steering wheel all the way to the right and left without binding up.

The center position will always have more play that turned to side as the center gets the ware to sides do not, that is why you have to check tightness at sides. Now that hole in the bushing he is talking about can be worn enough it cannot be tightened. Also the bearings at bottom of vertical shaft and on both front and rear of the worm part on steering shaft can be wore out and not hold it tight to gear on vertical shaft , sector gear, but not be loose enough to jump time. 4 total bearings to check for wear.
