Hello all, trying to find an answer to an issue that I am having. I replaced both the starter and solenoid for my 6v 8n, and now when re-attaching the battery cable when I touch the black (neg) to the post, the engine starts to turn over. This is my first 8n, so I am not really familiar with all of the nuances that could come about due to changing out original parts, but if anyone could lend a suggestion or two as to why this is happening I would greatly appreciate it. It is probably something incredibly simple, but due to my inexperience it is mind boggling. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

I'm assuming you have the original start circuit with starter button by the gear shift. Disconnect wire from small post on solenoid. If now ok when you connect battery cable either your small solenoid wire or starter switch is shorted to ground.

The solenoid could be stuck. With an ohm meter check across two large posts of solenoid. It should show a very high resistance reading. If it shows continuity, gently tap the body of the solenoid with a screwdriver handle.

You may have the wrong solenoid.
