IH 504D Rebuild

I have an IH 504D that I am thinking about rebuilding. Over the last couple years it has lost lots of power and started smoking a lot. Now it will start, but that's about it. I'm afraid to even move it from the barn for fear of not being able to drive it back in. I'm just wondering how difficult a rebuild will be on this. Can it be done in-frame or does the whole motor have to come out? If I get the rebuild kit, is there still any machining and additional work that has to be done by a professional or is this a doable job for the do it yourselfer? Any advice would be great. Thanks

Gas or diesel?

If it's gas, it is a doable job for a novice. Diesel, not so much so.

Diesel's are unforgiving beasts when it comes to repairs. No shortcuts allowed, they will eat your bank account! Even if you pull the engine and have it repaired, you'll sink more in it than the tractor is worth.

Gas engines can be repaired with the help of a shop manual. You will have outside machine work to be done. Don't buy a rebuild kit. There is no way to know what you need until it's dissembled and measured for wear. Doing an in tractor overhaul is really just buying some time, no way to do a decent job without getting it out and going it right.

I think you need to look into it further before you jump into an overhaul. When's the last time the engine was serviced? How much blow by is coming out of the breather? Has the air filter been changed? Or if oil bath type been cleaned throughly? Is the fuel cap vent plugged? When's the last time the fuel filters were changed? We had trouble once with a rubber line feeding the fuel filter collapsing. Maybe the injection pump governor drive ring is coming apart causing the lack of power.

We had a 3514 backhoe which has the same D188 engine that was throughly worn out and we had no issues with power. The only times we had trouble with power they were lack of fuel related.
