Rear engine sael repair

Oliver 70 - 6 cylinder. I have acquired the rope seal to complete the job. Can this be done without dropping the crank shaft. Can the top half be threaded through?

I have no idea if you can access it on your Oliver but I have done this on several engines over the years. At best, it is a pain. There is a snare tool made for this that does help. I have used a strong string also. Patience.
 
I've done it, but it's very difficult to do. You will need to drop the crank as far as possible, which won't
be much. Take off the main caps, block the clutch down, might even loosen the engine to bell housing bolts
and let it separate a little at the bottom. Then you can pry the crank down just a little...

Best solution is to find a rubber seal if anyone makes one, much easier to get in.

Another concern is, why was it was leaking? If the rest of the engine is loose, excess blowby, worn bearings,
the rear seal leak is more a symptom than a problem. If the engine is healthy, possibly the seal was not
properly installed initially. There is an art to getting one right, good luck!
 
You need to know if the rear bearing cap will come off from the bottom or if the seal goes in a plate in the back, no idea on a Oliver. About 40 years ago my boss showed me how to deal with those top seals, cut one of the ropes in little pieces with a razor blade, pack the old rope top seal up on both sides with a nice flat ended punch, then keep packing pieces of the new rope in each side with the punch until your flush, work the bottom seal into the cap and cut the ends a little long, torque the cap on, remove it and trim what was squeezed out on the block and cap with a sharp blade, oil it and button it up.
