350 farmall

I have a 350 farmall with positive track rear end. Is there any way to take it out of positive track position? It has a wide front end, and will not turn very good, it slides tires when turned either way. forward or reverse. I think it came out with narrow front end. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

No such thing a Posi-traction differential in a 1950's vintage FARMALL tractor. First diff locks were an
option in the 66-series, 766,966,1066 for sure had them according to my TC-167 parts book. Might have been
some installed in 56-series too, 856, 1256.

Sounds like either something is broke or wore completely out in your diff or somebody made it a "Lincoln
Locker". Welded the side gears to the diff pinion gears.

Depending on what you are doing, the front end pushes straight ahead when turning when pulling hard. But
with nothing being pulled you should be able to turn fairly sharp without using the inside brake.

I'd start diagnosing by jacking one or both rear wheels off the ground and see if they will spin
independently. Properly working open diff one wheel goes forward, other wheel backwards with transmission
in gear.

Thanks for the info. It will not turn very sharp even without pulling anything. So with both wheels off the ground in netural only one wheel will turn at a time? And in gear one will turn one way the other will turn the other way? How can I tell if it has been welded? Thanks

You have proven differential is working like designed, not welded or busted up. I would bet your turning problem is that someone has tried to repair or modify your wide front and messed up the steering geometry. When you turn the inside tire of the turn has to turn shorter to make a smaller circle than outside tire. If steering arms are installed wrong or modified incorrectly, they may not work as described. Some guys try to make wide fronts turn shorter but get the geometry wrong and end up with front tires sliding sideways upon turning.

Thanks . You are right about that because you can tell the front end has been added. The arms to the tie rod ends looks like they have been heated and bent up. Do you think I should put a narrow front end under it? Thanks for your advice/help.
