I'm new to this site and looking at this sweet tractor that purrs! Concerned about loose shifter setup and unsure if it has a high and low range. If it does, you can't tell by the way it travels. No grinding to get it into gear. Goes forward and back fine. Should I be concerned? Is a fix available? Thanks in advance!

does it have a hi/low range? does it?

hi / low will mean it needs a main 4spd tranny, then would have an extra lever out the bellhousing.

does it have one?

loose shifter?

is the pin and hole wallowed out and worn where the shifter rod enters the trans cover at the lil hump where the boot is?

goes forward and back fine / is it fixable.

well.. yeah.. if it goes forward and back fine and you want to fix that.. I guess you could fill the tranny with rocks, and that would sure fix it from going forward and back fine...;)

Wanna lets start over? you give us more info.. like.. maybe.. oh.. a couple pictures.. right and left side, in focus, so we can see the transmission.

and then we can give you some clear answers.

Great points :) Will get a pic as soon as I can. The part in question is a lever on the left side of the tractor near your left knee if you are sitting in the tractor. Instead of a forward/reverse shifter/shuttle on the column, the shuttle is on the left side. Is this clear enough ? :)
I'm in California, Sacramento and would love to know of anyone here/near here who really knows this tractor if I need more than your expert advise. My beloved tractor is really my 420 Ford- its a '78. She has served me for 25 years- runs great but won't move in forward- goes in reverse great.
The 4000 came up through a friend.
Sincerely appreciate any help and tips I can get! Am trying to find a similar basic tractor - the 4000 could be a good deal if I'm on my toes !

we need pics, and if possible, the numbers off the bellhousing aft of the starter.

there are some tractors with a shuttle.. and some with a regular multi range trans.. like combo.

pos the info and we will get you sorted.
