my friend has a 1952 ford 8n and he has started to have a problem with it running for quite a while . He can cut grass for a hour and a half and all of a sudden it quits . he pulls the choke out and it will start but not run good. I wonder if anyone has had a like problem .. He put new plugs in and new points and still has the problem . He was talking about buying a new carb but I told him to wait. I thought maybe the engine was getting too hot and shutting down but he said it was running at normal temp.

Always trouble shoot then parts NEVER the other way around. The moment it dies check that it has a good blue white spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more at the center coil wire on the cap and also at all 4 plugs a wires.
If that is good pull the carb drain plug form the bottom of the carb and make sure it has a good steady flow of gas. Catch the gas to check for water/dirt etc. But before pulling the drain plug slowly remove the gas cap and listen for air going out or coming in it may have a clogged tank vent

That will not matter one bit it will run just fine either way. Yes if backward the spark will not be as strong but yet strong enough for it to run till this time next year and then some

Its indeed "best" if a coil is wired at its correct and designed for polarity. If it didn't make a difference why would the designer and manufacturer bother with labeling coil terminals + or - lol. I'm NOT saying, however, that's his problem as a coil can still fire even if wired at the incorrect polarity.

Before buying a whole new expensive new carb insure that's the problem. There could be a minor carb problem like in the needle valve and seat not allowing sufficient gas flow or in the line from tank or the tank outlet or any filter or sediment bowl if so equipped. When it shuts down see how well gas is flowing into the carb and if she runs if choked but not otherwise that's a sign of a fuel flow (at tank outlet or any filter or sediment bowl) or needle and seat problem or the carb is simply clogged up and needs cleaned out. I have seen gas tanks not vented causing such problems.

When it shuts down look immediately to see if the plugs are firing a good strong blue spark. If its an ignition problem that happens only after all its warmed up, Id suspect a condenser or a faulty coil that breaks down once they get hot.
