Hi; I recently acquired a 1956 john deere 420u the valves were stuck, so I had the head rebuilt- reassembled everything and got it running, it started smoking withing a few seconds of starting it, I have no exhaust on it yet, oil was spraying out of the manifold. I disconnected the oil line to the head, and tried it again with the same results. I checked the compression, which is 120# on both cylinders. oil pressure is around 40#. what I would like to find out is how is the oil getting into the cylinders? is it possible its getting past the rings, even with good compression? the tractor was sitting about a year before I got it. any help appreciated thank you

If the valves were stuck, you could also have an oil control ring stuck. This would not affect compression.

When the engine was 1/2 way apart you may as well have gone all the way through it. Somebody sold that tractor for a reason.1-800-522-7448 for the service manual to obtain the specs. You can bet the cam and followers are worn too.
