Magneto installation, farmall M

Hello Friends; I am putting a magneto dist. back on a Farmall M and I can't remember the amount of clicks you turn the cam gear, was it 2 forward or 1 back? my old
memory needs a little reboot. I would really appreciate some help.

I've never heard of that method before.

Turn the rotor so it is pointing at the #1 tower on the cap. Have the engine on TDC compression stroke.

This is the correct procedure for mounting and timing the magneto on a Farmall M.

Turn the engine until the #1 piston is at top dead center on a compression stroke, the pin in the front end of the crankshaft will then be horizontal. Install the mag with the rotor pointing to the #1 terminal on the distributor cap. Rotate the top of the mag all the way towards the engine and then turn the engine 1/2 turn until the crank pin is horizontal again. Now SLOWLY rotate the top of the mag away from the engine until you hear the impulse "click" and then tighten the mounting bolts. The mag is now correctly timed.

You'll never get the mag to point to #1 on the cap because of the impulse coupling will trip before you get the mag installed. There is a impulse release but I'd have to look in my book, scan and post a picture rather than explain it. In the past have got the mag close to #1 cylinder, then back the engine up to match the coupling position on the mag. Then after the mag is installed crank the engine over forward it will wind up the impulse coupling and trip when #1 cyl is at TDC. Had good luck doing it that way.

If you had noticed where the rotor was pointing before pulling a mag or distributor then don't move the engine while they are off, then rotate the rotor where it was pointing and reinstall the mag or distributor. An easy way to keep the engine in time. Hal
