I own a case 300 tractor. Approximately one year ago it started running with no power under a load. The RPMs are just fine when not under a load. However once the tractor is in the higher range and high gear it cannot maintain a speed even on a flat surface. Does anyone have any ideas as to whether I should look at a carb rebuild or governor problem? Also it seems that when I am in lower range and lower gears pulling and implement I have no problem

Several things can cause the power loss you describe.

First area to check would be that the ignition system is operating properly. Check the points, point gap,
distributor bushings and centrifugal advance, ignition timing, plugs, and wires. Weak ignition will
typically cause starting and top end/high load problems.

Carb problems, if you suspect it's running rich, the exhaust will be blowing black smoke, or black soot
around the tail pipe. Too lean can be diagnosed by partially choking, see if the condition improves. Also
be sure the choke is properly adjusted, opening and closing fully. Try disconnecting the air cleaner, see
if performance improves. Many times the body of the air cleaner will be clogged with dirt. Just servicing
the oil bath is only part of the maintenance, the horse hair element needs cleaning too.

The action of the governor is easily checked. With the engine off, set the throttle lever for full speed.
Look at the carb throttle plate. It should be spring loaded to the wide open position. If it's not,
something is wrong with the governor, the linkage is out of adjustment, or something is binding, not
allowing it to go to full throttle. From a safe position, preferably have an assistant start the engine at
full throttle. Watch the carb linkage, once the engine starts and comes up to speed, the governor should
quickly throttle the engine down to around 2000 RPM and hold it there. Have the assistant return the engine
to idle, then quickly return it to full throttle. The carb plate should again return to wide open, then
throttle back to 2000 RPM again. If this happens, the governor is doing it's job properly. Note, surging is
typically a sign of too lean, not a governor problem.

Donald,

Sounds like the rear end and transmission is way

over full , coming from either leaking seal in eagle

hitch lift cyl or thru the seal where the pto comes

thru the transmission.

George, what you said made sense! My brother borrowed it to do some clearing with my brush hog and told me that he added lube. He said about a half gallon!!!!! Amy idea what the capacity should be? There is no dipstick or level indication plugs as far as I can see?

Don,

Dip stick for rear is large hex plug under seat,
you are probably 5 gallons over full. Just drain it
down to mark on dipstick.

Dipstick for triple range and hydraulic is 3/8
pipe plug in the triple range gear cover .

It dipsticks are broken off, better look for them.

I can measure the length if you need it.

ey George I have no dipsticks on either of those plugs. You would be my best friend for life if you could give me the measurements.

Don,

Dip stick for rear and trans is 10long from bottom of

plug, 8 3/4 from bottom of plug to full mark.

Dip stick for triple range is at the front right of

range shift cover , and is 6 1/2 long from bottom of plug.

Full mark is 3 in down and low mark is 3 3/4 down.
