kinda loud howling noise coming from bellhousing or front...

I bought a 1967 John Deere 4020 diesel synchro
range. The clutch adjustment is at the top of its
adjustment. But I hear a howling or whinning noise
coming from the bellhousing area or maybe in the
front of the transmission. It doesnt change with
trans clutch enagaged or disengaged. It doesnt
change with pto engaged or disengaged. I took the
hydraulic coupling off to see if itd stop the noise and
it doesnt. The trans shifts just fine. My guess is that
it is in the trans clutch or the pto clutch throw out
bearings. I did grease both throw out bearings but it
sounds pretty much the same. I figure if its in the
tranny itd go away with the foot clutch pedal
depressed. I figure if it was the lube pump in the
tranny itd go away with clutch pedal depressed. I
test drove a 1971 or 1972 4020 a few months before
I got this Girl. And the other tractor was ear pearcing
when you throttled up the engine. This tractor isnt
ear pearcing but i can hear it. It sounds like its at the front of the transmission or the rear of the bellhousing more than in the front of the bellhousing, so I doubt its the rear main thrust bearing. I can hear sone chatter or noise from the valve box at the base of the steering column. But I can still hear the howling with the hydraulic coupler removed so hydraulics were off. I took the lower cover off tbelow the bell housing and I dont see anything wrong.

If there is ANY "free travel" left on the foot clutch and the foot clutch is engaged and the PTO clutch disengaged, the two TO bearings are NOT running, so are NOT the source of your noise.
