Voltage regulator

I have a 1949 massey harris pony 6 volt, that I'm trying to get running. The cut out relay is fried (which from my research happens alot). So I want to switch it over to a voltage regulator. My question is what do I need to make the change?

I would think outside the box. It is a 3 brush generator correct? I would replace the cutout with a diode. A diode only allows current to flow in one direction. There are no moving parts and no adjustments.

You DO realize a VR has a cutout relay inside and is just as prone to failing as a stand-alone cutout relay, right?

Biggest thing to avoid killing the cutout relay points is to correctly polarize the generator before initial startup.

SURE, Its possible to change over. A full fledged Voltage Regulator certainly has advantages. It would have a BAT terminal same as your Cutout that wires to the Ammeter,,,,,,,,A GEN or ARM terminal that wires to your Gennys ARM post same as your Cutout,,,,,HOWEVER its FLD post wires to your Gennys FLD post INSTEAD OF THE GENNYS FLD POST WIRING TO YOUR LOW/HIGH CHARGE SWITCH.

CAUTION of course you need to find a full fledged Voltage Regulator that 6 Volts,,,,,,,,,,, suitable for and matches up to your Generator,,,,,,,, suitable for whatever Ground you use (Pos or Neg) AND THAT MAY BE A DIFFICULT TASK?????????????????????

ALSO some old Masseys used Class B Charging Systems if I'm not mistaken??? YOUR NEW VR MUSTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT be for your correct Class B or Class A system THEY CANT BE INTERCHANGED WHATSOEVER

ALSO if you have a 3 Brush adjustable Generator I would set it for MAX charge prior to the change AND DONT FORGET TO POLARIZE THE GENNY BEFORE START UP

NOTE I have performed these mods on Class A Deere and IHC Systems but those are easier to get parts for.

IF I WERE YOU ID CONSIDER DOING WHAT JS POSTED BELOW, JUST USE A DIODE AS A CUTOUT DEVICE AND LEAVE IT AS IS, MUCH MUCH EASIER AND CHEAPER

John T (not sure if your tractor uses an A or B charging system???????)

Ditto what the other guys said.

you have a few options.

1, replcae the cutout with a big diode or a paralleled segment off a diode bridge. ( and polarize the genny.. that's a big reason why cutout points burn and arc )

2, For some odd reason, many times a simple cutout relay for a 3 brush machine costs as much or MORE than a regular plain voltage regulator. for this reason, you can just find any cheapo vreg, and JUST use the arm/bat terminals. Circuit type will not matter.

3, wire your 3 brush genny like 2 brush, or wire your 2 brush switch tickled genny like a real regulator.

match or make match field circuit types.
