Oliver 1650 diesel

My tractor will start, but then die after about 10 - 15 seconds. I knocked the little glass ball out of the fitting for the return line and it ran fine for a while. Back to the same symptoms. Any ideas.

Return line is plugged. Confirm by taking loose the two screw timing cover allowing fuel out of housing next time it acts up, engine should act OK with the fuel leak. Best get the pump off and repaired before the retainer pins shear off inside, locking the hydraulic head and breaking the drive shaft. Just repaired a Case 580 pump for the same issue..

Can you blow air threw the return lines to remove blockage

Sometimes, but I've had better luck removing the complete injector return line to clean all the broken bits out. Since the pump return enters at the # 1 injector you might have luck removing the pump line and blowing back through the return at the tank end. If the return boots are cracked best replace them all. Straight boots are Stanadyne #16165, tee style is #16390.
