Ford 8N Governor Questions

Hello

Yep, I'm back, imagine that! ;) Finally getting around to tinkering with the governor. Here is the scoop. I have poor/no lower quadrant throttle control, when releasing clutch with brakes held I don't notice the governor kicking in (might be my inexperience though), however the governor will 'pull back' when pulling on the connecting rod. These were the 50 tips check-offs. I also notice it loses power under load and 'speeds' up when going down hill.

I'm not positive what the 'hunting' is, but when it first starts up the rpms fluctuate back and forth (will cut out if not giving some choke), which I assume is governor related (if not, tell me!).

The governor arms are loose, meaning they have side to side play. Also the arm that connects to the carb, won't go all the way forward (towards radiator), which prevents running at the lowest idle speed (pretty sure, been a while since I set the idle). Basically with no throttle, that arm won't go all the way forward. Just a few degrees, maybe 1/16th or so measuring movement at the top of the arm.

Also, I've found out I have no compensating spring. I assume I haven't noticed due to the throttle ball rubbing tight on the plate holding throttle in place. Just my assumption.

I've rebuilt the governor insides, but at the time (nor now) I couldn't find a repair kit for the arms, or really anything like how-to's online, etc. The linkages seem to be fine.

My thought was to add the compensating spring, and see if that helps. However I just feel like its got to be more than that little spring. What would y'all do? Step by step, replace spring, then move to governor, or just do it all at the same time? Is there a repair kit or DIY online anywhere (for the arms, not the insides), or is it common practice to just replace the whole governor?

Also, I've seen a lot online about adjusting the spring as its very touchy. I've assumed that is the compensating spring, not the spring between the arms of the governor. If I'm wrong on that, please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

o adjustment related to compensating spring. Comp spring purpose it to help counter the gov force that wants to move your throttle lever setting toward slower. Most don't even need one. If lever setting stays where you set it, you don't need one. The manual describes the setting of the spring between the two arms. The gov arm closest to gov/furthermost from engine is connected to nothing inside gov and generally gets sloppy from wear & many remedy with a shim, brass or cut al strop from a beer can wrapped around the arm bearing surface of the gov housing. There is a gov rebuild paper under HOW TO's on the NTC web site.

JMOR - thanks for the reply, its appreciated! And that rebuild paper was my guide when rebuilding the insides, very useful and friendly.
Wish it had detail on the arms. I've searched a ton online, and can't really find much on the arm adjustments.

Few more questions (for anyone).

1. What exactly is the 'trunnion'? I can find the definition, but can't really understand where I'm supposed to be measuring. '...if the
trunnion for the manual lever measures less than .916 inch'

2. Is there anything special with the governor setting gauge, or would any flat surface suffice?

3. Go/No-go gauge - is this something I can make myself?

I've searched a ton online, as I hate to ask questions on here that are already answered. I just can't find any of this stuff. Not sure
if its just real simple and I'm overthinking it, or what.

Also, I didn't see anything in the manual on the spring adjustment, but figure that should be pretty simple to figure out. I hope.

Thanks!

What is this & where did it come from? Don't recall seeing? " '...if the
trunnion for the manual lever measures less than .916 inch' "

JMOR - Its on page 38 of the 'Service Manual Ford 9N, 2N, & 8N Farm Tractors' that I bought from this site.

K, I think that 0.916" would be the diameter of the part of gov housing that the arm nearest the housing slips over & pivots on.

That makes sense, I'll measure it tonight.

Any ideas on the governor jig deal or the go/no-go? Not finding a way to purchase nor make my own online...

Thx again!

Just to update. I went back and re-inspected the linkage, doing a much better this job to really understand it all. It seems the speed
adjust to inside governor arm linkage was too short, thus preventing the outer arm from moving all the way slower (towards radiator). I have
yet to fire her up, but logically that seems to be the issue. Still going to break it back down and rebuild the arm side of the governor.

Thank you very much JMOR!
