ou will get a beating from the safety police just for asking that question.

Yeah I am for sure a beginner at this. Replaced the starter, Points, et al, and it started up fine yesterday. Today I turn it on and put the shifter to the start position and nothing. I am in the process of re-cleaning all my contacts. If that doesn't work, I guess I could replace the ignition switch, but would be lost if it has something to do with the shifter not making whatever contact it makes when you move it to the start position!

The ignition switch won't keep the starter from turning the engine over.

Get a simple test light. Start testing for voltage along the starter circuit with the start lever held down.
That way you will be "load testing" the battery, cables, starter contacts and starter. Just be careful, it
could make contact and start cranking while you are testing!

Ignition switch and starter set up are 2 different circuits and the starter will spin over with or with out ignition turned on. To check things make sure it is out of gear then use jumper cables and run a cable form the ignition side of the battery to the starter and see if it will spin over. It is does then ya starter part of the shifter may have a problem or if it has a solenoid it may going bad

Today I noticed if I tapped lightly on the starter the tractor would start to turn over, but only briefly. Is that indicative of any particular problem?
