looks like a good set. you can always get individuals if you need one that is not in the set. i have a set from mac tools and like it. they are different from a tap and die set as they do not cut new threads, but repair and clean old threads.

Depends on the tractor. The last tractor I worked on that set would have only been a help for the small stuff. I had bolt holes that where in the 3/4 and 5/8

Silliest thing I have heard of. Only people that have not drilled and tapped holes would fall that. Drill a hole and tap it, clean it out with an air hose as well as clean the tap. Run the tap back in and out fifty times and you will not change the original hole one bit and will not have any new residue on the tap. It will run in an out like a bolt with your fingers. All a regular tap will do is clean out an old hole with less effort. After over 50 years of drilling, tapping and repairing damaged threads in steel of different hardness's of tool steel all I can do is shake my head when I hear how a dull tap will clean a hole without damage. A damaged thread is just that damaged. You may be able to run a dull tap in and then get a bolt to turn easy but the thread is still damaged and will never be as good as before it was damaged. A sharp tap will do the same thing only turn easier and get all the dirt out. People will still buy the stuff regardless along with easyouts so they can break them off and wonder how to get them out.

i guess to each his own. i use my mac set here at the shop. i would not run a die down a bolt or stud with rolled threads, i always use the chase set so i am not cutting new threads. also, the thread files that are in the set are nice for cleaning up the threads on axle ends. you can start working from good threads back out to the end and save a part vs replacing. they also work nice on threads in engine blocks that retain studs.

So then you wouldn't put a rolled threaded bolt in a fresh tapped hole. As you said to each his own. Buy a new rolled threaded bolt and a new hardware die and you can turn it on the bolt with your fingers if the threads have not been dinged in the bolt ben. Products sold using fear.
I just went out to my home shop and picked up a new 1/2" 13 bolt with rolled threads and my home 1/2" thread die. I took a picture of the bolt with the die and then screwed the die on the threads with my fingers that are attached to my crippled hands. I had to sort the bolts as a lot of them had small dings in the threads from being tossed around. None of the anodizing was removed from bolt in the picture with the die while screwing the die on the bolt.

Go for it, you'll surely get a lot of use out of the thread file set. For the price of that kit, it'll pay for itself the 1st time you use it.

I use chasers all the time. The reason being they are not tapered. A good chaser should be sharp. I agree with dick l on that but the purpose of a chaser is when tapping blind holes. They cut threads all the way to the bottom.

So do bottom taps clean all the way to the bottom. I keep taps in sets of three. A lead tap, a plug tap and a bottom tap. I am not against anyone buying or using the chaser kits but being under the opinion that regular taps and dies will ruin a hole or threads is just silly. If it was the case you wouldn't be able to mix and match rolled thread bolts with regular taped holes. It would take a special tap. I bought the holders for regular taps where I could use a air tool to speed up cleaning holes when working on engines and such.

I would have to agree with that. Yesterday I ran a regular tap down the head bolt holes in a dt466. I do this several times a year whenever I overhaul one to remove the carbon from the holes. I dont have a chaser or bottom tap for these. Ive never had any problems and have never cut any metal out of them.
