Farmall MD runs wild

IHWD6

New User
Hello Everyone, I just puchased an MD to go along with my WD-6. The guy I purchased it from said the last time he tried to start it, when he switched it to diesel the engine started to rev up well past where he had the throttle set so he switched it back to gas and didn't do anything with it after that. It always did run real nice and is a solid tractor but sat for a while now. Any ideas what the issue could be and where to start to get it fixed?

Thank you,

Linkage is the first thing to check then broken springs etc. I do not know that tractor but know the IH gas over diesel engines. Had a TD 6 years ago

My 400D did that to me recently, in my case it was caused by sucking gas into the diesel system. I imagine something stuck on me but was never able to find what. It has not happened to me again, but as a precaution as soon as I switch to diesel I get down and turn the gas off. You may want to try that and see if it still is running wild. If it is then I would start with the governor. You may want to post this down on the IH/Farmall Board.

Interesting. I will try it again and see what happens. I've had a couple people think it was something in the pump but to me the governor would make more sense for controlling speed. Thanks for your insight, I'll give it another try.

My father in law used to have a MD. There was a seal in the injection pump that would leak and when the injection pump would fill with fuel it would start to run away. He knew what it sounded like when it was getting ready to run away and could shut it down in time.

Thank you all for the info. I have not had a chance to have a look at it yet. Little ones and trying to get things ready for the RPRU haven't given me much time lately. I will certainly update when I get a chance to look at it. Thanks again.

I'm sure you know this but, if anything that will combust getting into the intake side can cause it to runaway regardless what the governor is telling it. Bill

Update......
I finally was able to have a look at this tractor. It hadn't ran in quite some time and last fall I had it running on gas enough to get in the shed. Now I needed to move it again and had some 60 degree weather in North Dakota in March so I could tinker with it. I was told to take the cover off the side of the pump and make sure everything was lubed and moving freely in there; it was but the oil seemed to be half full of fuel. After draining this mixture, I ran it for a bit on gas and tried switching several times. Eventually I got the fuel system bled and was able to get it to switch and run on diesel. I'm thinking it had/has the same issue with a bad seal filling the pump maybe. For not running in a number of years, it actually ran decent with old fuel and all. I will work with it for a bit and hopefully don't have any other issues. Still may have to have the pump rebuilt and clean the injectors but I was pretty excited for it to run on diesel and run well.
