I have an old Howard Rotavator J which attaches to a little Kubota tractor. The shear bolt keeps shearing when I'm trying to till...any suggestions? I'm greasing it and replacing the bolt with a #2 3/8ths inch but so far, it doesn't last long.

Are you using the run of the mill bolts?? If you are you may need to go with grade 5 or grade 8 bolts since the common run of the mill bolts are real soft

According to Howard the shear bolt should be #2. Use of 5 or 8 could cause damage to either the tiller or the tractor.

I would get a few grade 5 and a few grade 8 bolts an try the first and if that does not hold up try to 2nd choice. I use a grade 8 bolt on my brush hog and it shears them from time to time

Farmerkath, are you getting the bolts good and tight? part of the resistance to shearing is the friction between the surfaces that the bolt an nut holds together.
