Charging light staying on all the time

I had a electrical problem with my 1985 JD 750 compact tractor. The voltage regulator went bad and it burned both the wires going to the alternator at their connection point. I repaired the wires by cutting out the bad section and putting new connectors on. Then I replaced the voltage regulator. The tractor now starts fine but the charging light is on all the time, even when the key is turned off. I have to disconnect the positive battery post to get it to go off. I also check all the wiring, I could, to see if there was another frayed wire that might be touching the frame, but could not find anything. Could it be in the key switch and not disconnecting somehow when turned to the off position, but the light does stay on even when tractor is running? Any idea as to what to check next or what the problem might be?

I have not removed all the tape or coverings from the wiring harness and I guess I should do that to see if anything in there is melted together. Nothing visible from the outside. Thanks

With engine "off", disconnect the two wires to the alternator. Does the light go out? If it does, likely the alternator is shorted.

(This is an alternator in the truest sense of the word... the two wires from the alternator carry AC current to the regulator/rectifier, when the AC is converted to DC and the charging output voltage is regulated.)
