I have searched the internet to help me answer this question, but for some strange reason I cant find the answer. I'm sure it has been asked more than once on this forum but I could not find it in the search bar. I just bought my grandfather-in-laws 1937 John Deere Unstyled A. It has sat in his barn for the better part of 20 years. The motor in not locked up, gas and water drained, and appears to be in excellent condition. My question is what are the proper steps to preparing it to run again.

Thanks in advance for the advise.

Congratulations. It's good to hear that you are bringing a tractors back to life.
The Deere section of this site has several experts on the topic.
Ensuring the mag will throw a spark would be the first order of business. Pull the plugs, roll her over and check that the mag's impulse snaps and a fat blue spark jumps the plug gap.
The parts book is free on the Jd web site. The nice folks at 1-800-522-7448 have the real JD operator's manual on CD and hard copy.

Of it where me I would jack the front of it up say 18 or so inches then fill the cylinder with ATF and let sit a week or 2. That will lube up and free up the rings so then when you have things like the carb cleaned and the points/spark as they should be you will have compression needed to run it.
