have a Ford 340 that i ran dry of fuel,i connot get the system bled or get the tractor running since

unfortunately this tractor predates fuel prime pumps so your using the starter to Barr the engine to bleed/prime the fuel system

ive since had to replace the battery and fried a starter trying to get this thing running

my question is has anyone ,or is there a way to add a prime pump to get this thing bled and running,,,i really dont feel like frying yet another starter

ive tried bleeding #1 cylinder only,#1 and 2 at the same time no joy,i just get a dribble,no spray,,,ive pretty much tried all combinations of all 3 cylinders

replaced filter and got good flow from filter bleed

im at my wits end,any and all help would be immensely appreciated

thanks, and at this point any suggestion is welcome,,,Dave

Some times the easiest way to start a diesel that you ran out of fuel is to simply pull it with another tractor and try to start it that way. BTDT to many times over the years

thank you very much for the reply,i do not have access to another tractor or i would definetly give that a go

how involved is it to do away with the mechanical fuel pump and switch to an electric fuel pump, and would this solve the problem of bleeding?

or is there a way to implement a thumb prime pump or an electric prime pump?

i love the tractor, its a real work horse, but i will never buy another with no prime pump again,,,,,tractor with no prime pump will equal buying a truck that doesnt run,,,,,,i just wont do it

that starter cost me 2 bills,i will douse the tractor in fuel and set a match to it before i burn up another barring the engine over with it,,,,thats how frustrated i am 04/30/15)

I ran my 971 out of fuel once. Knowing that it would be an ordeal I just left it and went and got another tractor to finish raking the hay. The next day I went through the bleed procedure and it took awhile, boosting from my truck, to get it started. I have never gotten a "spray" at the injector fitting when bleeding a diesel. I get just a dribble. That tells me that I have gotten the air out. Once I have the air out, I insure that I have the battery topped off and depending on what Tractor it is, and the battery condition, I may also boost with jump pack or booster cables. We know that we can crank a diesel all day at 99% of the speed that it needs to fire off, so we know that we need to be sure that it is cranking fast enough. This has worked for me on both my 971 and my 9000 and a Case and a David Brown that I used to have.

show crop,,,thank you for the tip on the boost jump, never thought of that,,,i did purchase a new battery,,,,i do also have a boost pack as well

everyone i spoke with said it would spray all over the place once the air was purged from the line,so thats what i was expecting

ive never had a diesel anything before,so its all new to me,if i get this ole girl dancing again you better believe she wont ever go hungry again after all of this

i did know it wasnt good to run them dry,i got in a zone working on it and just didnt keep track

thanks again,Dave

What about using a truck to pull it. Ran out of diesel with a Ford back hoe years ago on the hwy and a guy stopped and pulled me after we added more fuel and after about 100yard it fired right up
