My mid 70' Cub 154 lowboy goes into gear, slightly moves, then wont move at all. Motor runs fine. Does anyone have any theories? Since Ive had it (3years) it has grinded when I go to shift.

Clutch Problem? They are not known to have the strongest clutch system. I think on 154s the clutch is located back near the front of the transaxle, kind of under where you sit. I had a 154 in the 1990s but did not have to do much to it. Dad has a 184 now, clutch is on engine flywheel. The 154 also has a 'clutch brake' to stop the clutch and allow the transmission to go into gear better, if I am remembering correctly.

Seems to me that the last one I put a new
clutch and driveshaft in has a key and keyway
cut into the driveshaft at the transmission end.
At that time you couldn't get that shaft for a 154
but one for a regular cub was available and had
the right splines on the end, although a bit
longer. I cut it off to the right length and had a
machine shop cut a keyway in the new shaft.
That key and the splines at the clutch end were
hanging on by a thread. Maybe that key on
yours is sheared, if equipped the same as the
one I worked on.

Could be a number of problems. #1 bad clutch. #2 broken drive shaft/input shaft. #3 something broken in the transmission. #4 ring/pinion gear problem. #5 broken axle
