6v to 12v coil

I know it can be done I'm looking for a part number. I have a '53 IH McCormick Farmall Super M. I have a bad 6volt coil and was told I can use a 12 volt internal resistor coil. Now I just need a part number. Thanks for the help.

There are no internal resistor coils, there are only coils with primary windings that are sized to run on 6V or 12V without an external ballast resistor.

6V will have a 1.5-2 ohm primary winding, a 12V coil will have a 3-4 ohm primary winding.

A 1.5-2 ohm coil can be used on 12V with a correctly sized(usually 1.5-2 ohm) external ballast resistor.

You stated: "I have a bad 6 volt coil and was told I can use a 12 volt internal resistor coil."

Welllllllll if you have a 12 volt tractor, sure you can use a 12 volt coil, BUT IN THAT CASE YOU WOULD NOTTTTTTTTTT USE ANY IN LINE SERIES VOLTAGE DROPPING (12 to 6) BALLAST RESISTOR.

a) If you now have a 6 volt coil as you state, but its a 12 volt tractor and there's an in line external series Ballast Resistor, DO NOT USE THE BALLAST IF YOU USE A 12 VOLT COIL.

b) If its a 6 volt tractor, you can NOT use a 12 volt coil, you need a 6 volt coil WELL DUH

NOTE 1: They did make some coils, mostly for older automobiles, that had a coil with an internal discrete stand alone ballast resistor tucked away inside the can, HOWEVER in all my years as a used tractor dealer I NEVER saw any stock farm tractor coils with internal ballast resistors hidden inside the can IE tractor coils usually DID NOT have internal ballast resistors, they were not "internally ballasted"

Got it???
