Rookie on 9N brakes.

Had a 9N given to me a couple years ago. Still very much in the learning stages. My question concerns brakes.

1. When I step on my right one, the tractor coasts for fifteen or twenty feet before the brake engages. Anyone ever see that before? Got any suggestions?

2. From reading previous posts, I understand there is a relationship between the clutch and the left brake. Could someone explain what that might be?

Wonderful site, BTW. None of the usual snarky, caustic comments one usually finds on the Web.

I would suspect the brake problem is grease soaked shoes. A common problem when the axle seal fails.

One of the best investments you could make would be a shop manual before going in for repairs. It will pay for itself many times over in mistakes not made!

As Steve suggested/recommended , get the FO-4 manual (this site sells it), it's worth it's price (less than a tank of gas).
The brakes on these tractors were NOT the greatest to begin with.
As Steve also suggested they are probably oil soaked.
There is a forum here that is dedicated to the 9N/2N/8N with LOTS of great knowledge they freely share.

If I where you I would ask this down in the 9N/2N/8N forum down lower you will get a lot more help down there. That said it is common to have the trans/hyds/rear end over full which will cause a leaking seal which then soaks the brakes with oil. As fr the left brake clutch and brake work separately of each other there just both on the same side which makes pushing the clutch down and the brake down at the same time super hard
