John Deere 70 Diesel Tractor

I am looking for help with this tractor.

The problem is when I go to start it the starter gear grinds against the gear on the flywheel. Both the small gear and the gear on the flywheel are very worn.

My question is can those two gears be flipped around?

In order to do this I need to remove the flywheel, how do I do that? The flywheel does not have the two clamping bolts like the service manual says it should. If I remember correctly my dad replaced the flywheels years ago, (I was a teenagers then and didn't watch or help him do it) My dad is gone now so no asking him.

Doing research I have found that it has a compression sleeve on the crank shaft. I have no idea how to remove the flywheel to flip the gear around

Any help would be appreciated

I am guessing it has a taper-lock flywheel. Allen Machine in Tn. made those to repair the bad flywheel & worn crankshaft splines. I am sure if you get on the John Deere forum Blacksmoke or someone can help you. You can call Allen Machine in TN. They are very helpful, they built the flywheel . Try 423-753-5738.

Not correct way but you can pull the engage leaver slightly then start pony then pullback all the way. I have been using my 70d that way for snow plowing for decades in Minnesota. It seems to not slip the pony clutch as much when starting in the cold. Dan

If it's like a gasser the ring gear can not be flipped. There is a bevel ground into the side of the ring gear on the starter side.

Grinding a bevel on the fresh side is simple enough. The starting system works well enough if the components are not broken, worn, out of adjustment or stuck .

Jim, if you're talking about the bevel on the ring gear teeth, you can flip the gear, pull start the tractor, and lightly touch a weld grinder to the spinning teeth to produce a nice bevel. Never tried it on a 70, but it works fine on a 630.

Watch your long hair around that spinning flywheel!

(I'm bald, that's a joke)

PJH thanks for the tip. I'll have to try that on my 630 whenever I get the time. I'd have to get REAL close to get my hair in it. LOL
