Backhoe will not start need help

I have a 4500 ford backhoe built in the 1970’s. I
was using the backhoe and the tractor motor
stopped running. I assumed I ran it out of diesel
fuel. I have had 2 different people try and get it
started by bleeding the lines, changing the oil
and oil filter, spraying ether into it. The
tractor has started but only ran for a moment. at
first there was no fuel coming out of the overflow
but last time it did but still will not start. Any
suggestions before I have to bring in the local
ford dealer to see if they can help? Any help
would be greatly appreciated. Dawn

If you run a diesel out of fuel you can spend hours trying to get it running again. You have to bleed ALL the air out of ALL the lines from the fuel tank all the way to the injectors.

Thank you for your reply. I did everything you mentioned yesterday and it still did not start. Any suggestions on what I could
try next?

Open the bleed port on the side of the injection pump. Apply 2-3 psi to the fuel tank to force fuel through the entire system.
usually a manual stroke lever on the mechanical fuel pump will also do that task.

Thank you, I really appreciate your help. We tried this over the weekend. We used a compressor and forced air through the fuel
tank while bleeding. It appears that fuel is making it through the system and I have some fuel coming out of the over flow but
still not starting. It did however sound a little more like it might start but didn't. Also it does not take long to kill the
battery. If fuel is coming out through the overflow does that mean it's making it through the system?

This is so frustrating, It was running fine and then all of a sudden it just stopped running right in the middle of using it.
Again I am assuming I ran it out of fuel.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Fuel over flow ? You have totally missed the point here. The idea is to put 2-3 psi in the tank and force out the air trapped in lines, pump, filter and injection pump with fuel.
Time to call in a a pro here because something is going to get wrecked.
