Farmall 656 brake problems

We are having issues with the brakes on our Farmall. When we are reversing and applying the right brake the brake grabs and sticks. When going forward the left sticks. We have cleaned them and there was no scaring. Any ideas on how to keep this from happening would be great. Thanks.

Are those just a dry, double disc brake? I think one campany made those for IH,Oliver and others. Those balls between the plates have to be clean and don't overlook the tension of the springs that hold those together. If they're too weak, they won't roll the plates back together on the balls like they should.

I've had both a 656 for 15 years and a 4420 jd combine longer, the brakes are the same in both. I tried everything to make them work and keep them from sticking, the best thing that I did was not adjust them too tight. If you've got a little pedal and it stops be happy. You can put new linings, balls and springs in and you still won't be happy, the nature of the beast.

Thanks for the info. We will be checking into that. Thanks again.

There's an article written by The Tractor Doctor in
every issue of Red Power Magazine. Was 6-8 months
ago he explained how to prevent that sticking from
happening. What's happening is your brake actuators,
the two center cast plates are moving too far trying
to apply pressure against the brake disks and the
stationary brake disk surfaces. Your lucky that the
fix on a 656 is easy. The brake drum is two pieces,
and there's steel shims between the two parts.
Simply remove a shim or two from between the two
parts of the drum. Save the shims, you may need
them with new brake disks. The older drums on Super
C, Super H/Super M, SM- TA, 300/400/350/450 are cast
one piece. The top face of the drum needs to be
ground off .050 inches to correct that problem on
those models.
