Ford 4000 gasser trans/hydraulic connection question

Look at the attached photos and tell me what the two holes/pins on either side of he PTO shaft are for. The photo of the inside of the hydraulic section is taken towards the trans and the second photo is of a metal "top hat" that was barely inserted over one of those pins...... What are they and are they necessary? The local ford dealer can't even find them in a schematic.

Aren't those holes for the shift shaft rails? The top hat insert would likely be the bushing to allow them to pivot/rotate without wearing the trans casting.

Not a "for sure" just my best guess.

Post back if you find out otherwise.
 
looked again, saw the flat side on shaft---surely its a shift rail, bet the top hats' are to seal..-No longer necessary if using same fluid in both gearboxes
 
Creekfisher, Welcome to YT! For future reference when looking for info on your 4000 tell weather it is a 4 cyl or three. The two models have the same number designation but are completely different.
