Land pride utv/Honda Question

Have a light duty land pride utv with a 20 hp Honda GX 620. Intermittently it just clicks and won't start. Battery is good. Will start if I jump terminals on the solenoid. Normally I would just say the solenoid is bad but when it clicks and there is no start, the dash mounted voltmeter shows less than 12 volts even though the battery shows 12.5 or so when checked directly. So in short even though the battery is good 12.5, intermittently the voltmeter is less than 12 volts and no start unless I jump the solenoid. All connections clean and tight. Solenoid or something else? Thanks

Using the multi meter, go across the power lugs of the solenoid. With the solenoid open, the voltage should be same as the battery. Hit the start switch until the solenoid does it's "click and fail to start", hold the switch and check the multi meter. If it shows anything more than 2 to 3 volts, the solenoid is bad, 0 volts is preferred.

If the solenoid passes the test, connect the black lead to a bare metal ground, connect the red to the battery side of the solenoid. Repeat the test. If the voltage stays up around 12 volts, the battery and connections are good.If it falls to 0 volts, or drops to a very low voltage, there is a bad cable connection or bad/low battery.

If the bat/cables pass, move the red lead to the starter side of the solenoid, repeat the test. If the voltage stays low, 0 volts to 3 volts, the solenoid is bad. If the voltage is up around 12 volts the solenoid is good.

If there is 12 volts to the starter lug, and the starter is not turning, the starter is bad.

The voltage drop you see on the dash volt meter is caused by resistance in the wiring. Nothing to worry about at only .5 volt.
