I have just purchased a 1963 560 diesel will not start unless you give it a little starting fluid. I have checked the glow plugs somebody told me to test with power to end of glow plug if sparks it should be good ? or i also tested by upluging them and pluging one on at a time and gauge should go half way up both ways seem to work fine. i have checked for fuel in line to pump seams good ? I installed two new 650cca batteries new cables cleanes all connections.

Hi everybody thankyou for any help . I have recently purchased a couple of farmall tractors new to them so not sure were to go . the 560 diesel dosent want to start unless you give a little starting fluid . Have checked glow plugs a couple of ways first by unpluging them then putting one on at a time and gauge goes up half way which they all do. Also by checking each one with power if they spark should be good which they do.?? Have checked line to the pump for fuel seams good . two new batteries 650cca new cables cleaned all connections. How long should you hold glow plugs on? have tried anything from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. will smoke a little but will not fire with just them . Not sure if starter is turning over fast enough is that a big factor? Frustrated. The 706 has a slight wine from a pump under gas tank but hyd was low and lite on dash is flashing not oil but the other one to the right. Any help very much appreciated Thankyou

560 diesel is hard starting !!!!!! Thats the fact Jack!!!!
Borrowed neighbors once when had a tractor down. On a 70 degree summer day , if tractor had been running and shut off for 15min ,would have too do the whole cold start over again....hold glow plug button for 4-5 min. and hit starter and if lucky maybe it would start !!!!
Check glowplugs , battery ,injection pump ,starter , charging system and if all are operating 100%....the tractor should start without ether or NOT!!! John

Well on a old stile D236-D301 the glow plugs are a big thing and they have to be working 100% , Now as to time of use on them It depends on outside temp. When they were new on a warm day it took like 30 seconds (now don't hold me to the time as i can see the old decal in my mind as it gave you a time frame for outside temp. and i could be off a bit. ) And on a cold day it was i think over a min. and your thumb would get tired from holding the button. Next is compression, you need good compression , then you need a injection pump that has good cranking pressure , the starter needs to be spinning a good engine over fast enough so that it is building heat . Then the injectors need to be breaking at the proper cracking pressure and also pump timing and valve adjustment . keep in mind that your new toy has had many years of field testing and it just maybe plum wore out . Can it be brought back to life , yep sure can if your check book has a deep bottom to it and you have the time and will power . And OH one more thing you never want to use either on that engine if you have used the glow plugs .
