1978 Hyster H200 HE

I recently purchased a 1978 Hyster HS200 HE with a shuttle shift transmission and a Perkins 354 engine. The other day I noticed a study oil drip coming from around solenoid housing on the starter. I pulled the starter off and about 3 quarts of oil came out of the bell housing. Should there be oil here? A mechanic was telling me some older equipment had sealed starters. The guy I bought the fork truck from had recently put a new starter on. Could this just possibly be the wrong starter, and I all I need is a sealed starter? Hopefully someone out there is experienced with these old Hysters. Thanks in advance!

No personal experience with that model, but having
oil in the bell housing does not sound normal.
Never heard of a sealed starter.

Was the oil from the engine or transmission? That
will be valuable info if it's not supposed to be
in there.

If you don't get a definite answer, a shop manual
would be a good investment before going in.

Steve,
Having oil in the bell housing is something I have not seen before either. However, at the very bottom, there is a drain pepcock. The oil appears to be engine oil. I am going to call my local service dealer tomorrow and see if I can get a service manual.

A service manual from the dealer is going to be expensive!

Might look on Ebay, or ask if the dealer would let you look at one, maybe a local shop would have one or some answers.

The Dealer's price was $250, but I downloaded it last night from a company on the internet, TradeBit, for $24. I got the Parts manual and the Service Manual. There is a lot of information here. I'm going to try to go through it today.

Is it possible that it has a wet clutch, similar to
the hand clutch on Allis wd/wd45? I do remember
that one place I worked had a Clark with wet
clutch, also older Clark & Hyster with dry clutch.

I read in my service manual that it has a oil clutch and the pressure plate os installed directly to the fly wheel.

I had a WD 45 a couple years back. Never had to service the clutch on it. Anyways im my manual, I found that it does have a wet clutch. So would the oil I drained out of the bell housing be gear oil or just hydraulic oil from the hydraulic oil resivor?

WD & WD45 foot clutch was dry, hand clutch used same as in trans.
Not sure which was used by Hyster. Since you located a manual, it should be listed in there.

I figured it out that it is a wet clutch. There is a jet pump attached to the clutch housing that pumps cooling oil into the clutch assembly. I can stop the oil from filling up the bell housing via the Hydraulic oil shut off valve. Next time I need to pull the starter off, I just need to drain the housing by opening the pepcock at the bottom. I need to get with my starter/alternator guy to see if I can find the correct sealed starter.
