basic bearing question

I'm looking at some overhaul kits on here and see that you can order bearings in standard, .010 .020 .030 etc. Can someone please explain this to me? Does that mean if my crank is ground .010 then I would order .010 rod bearings?

Basically whatever is removed from crank pin or main journal, is what is added to the bearing. If crank is .010 under from clean-up grind then bearing is .010 oversized. The oil clearance is a built in factor in the manufacture of bearing.

UNDERSIZED! For gosh sakes, the OP came here for help, no need to give him backwards info!

If you are replacing bearings, you should have groove-less and scar-free crank journals that measure to within the wear tolerances in the manual. When they fail those requirements the crank is ground to the next undersize. Pick up an old automotive textbook and read up on the basics so that you know what the repair manual assumes you already know.

Yes that is what it means. It is usually put on the back of the bearing as well. One concern is if you took out .010 bearings and are putting in new .010 bearings, plastigage them to make sure of the oil clearance is still in specification.

Yes, that's exactly correct. If 10 thousands were taken off your crank, the hole in the bearings need to be 10 thousands smaller to maintain proper clearance in order to maintain proper clearance between the crank and bearing.

talk to your machine shop about the needed bearings. I always buy them from the shop. They can source exactly what you need to match up with what they do to your crank and block and head. You are then assured of everything being right.

Mains can be one size and rods another, have shop mic the crank and tell you what size to get.
