1953 Farmall chain drop box

I have a 1953 Farmall B tractor with a chain drop box on the rear wheels. On the lower part of the chain box (picture available on request) there is a plug. I am thinking that it is the gear lube level plug but the former owner tells me that the oil level is checked by removing the wheel and the dome cover behind the wheel at the top of the chain box. Who is right?
Thanks
Dave

I think what your talking about is a gear cover not a chain box and there is a check plug on back side you don't have to take wheel off. Farmall stopped building the B with the 1947 model year.

No chain but a set o gears often call bull gears. As the other guy says last year for the B was 47

Not sure if I am doing this right but here goes. The former owner assures me that there is a big chain in this box. If either of you or both are willing to look I would like to send you a picture so that we know we are talking about the same thing. My email address is [email protected]

Both of us have our e-mail open so it is easy to send either of us an e-mail. I have parts of more then one Farmall B and built a BA using parts of 2 Bs and an A. No chain in the cover under the axle but a set of gears

I am new to this site but I checked both of your profiles and find no e-mail addresses. Please let me know how to get them.
Thank you so much for your help.

Do you use Modern or classic?? If you use classic in the bottom of the box is says send e-mail. In modern if I remember right you just click on either one of our names and it send you to the email set up.

Sorry to be such a pain in the butt but it seems that I have neither as neither option seems to be available to me. Also I tried twice to send you an e-mail at the address you gave me and they both came back as user unknown. my e-mail address is [email protected]
Thanks again

In modern view, the only one I see open is Old's email.

Not sure what view I have but it seems to be none of the above.
My original question was that I have what I was told was a 1953 farnall B row crop (high crop) tractor that I am restoring. On the end of each axel their is a drop box which I was told by the former owner was a chain box. I am looking to check the lubrication level as the tractor has been sitting for about 25 years. He said that I would have to take off the tire and remove the domed cover on the outside of the drop box. However, I see a plug about six inches above the bottom of the box. I am thinking that it is the lubrication level indicator rather than the dome on the inside top of the wheel and was hoping to find someone who could tell me for sure. So far I have found out that the model B was discontinued after 1947 and it may not be a chain box after all. I have been unable to send Old the pictures because of an e-mail address issue. If you are familiar with this unit, and are willing to help, please send me your e-mail address and I will send you pictures so that maybe we can find out just what I have and how to check the fluid level.
Thanks
Dave

Dave, It may help you to see a diagram of your drop box.
If so go to www.messicks.com This is a Case/IH on line parts catalog. When you get there enter FARMALL B in model number. Click on (12) CHASSIS, Then click on (092) CHASSIS FINAL DRIVE. This will show the final drive parts diagram with gears in the drop box. Be sure and click on the + sign to blow up the size of diagram.

Now you did mention "high crop" in one of your posts. It got me thinking, I think I have read about After market company that may have modified a few of these tractors and made them very high clearance. They may have used a chain in drop box to raise them higher than stock. Yours would not be something like that would it ?

Does your high crop look like this ?

D beatty, Thanks for posting the picture. If I drove that all day, I would not want to climb off and on the Tractor very many times ! When I had the urge I would just "water" the crop from up above ! (grin)

Not even close. Well maybe from the waist up. The drop from the center line of the main axel to the center line of the wheel hub is 8" Maybe I should but a ? after the "high crop"

That's just plan old b! If you go around to the back side you will see that pan you were talking about. Just above it (pan) you should see a plug that takes a square drive fron socket set to take it out. This is oil level and fill plug. That is a gear in there no chain and I use a 140 gear oil in that case.
