Fixing Rippled Sheet Metal Edges

The hood on my Oliver 1650 has a wavy or rippled edge on the dash end where it lays up against the dash. What is the best way to flatten this edge out? The rest of the hood is pretty good but it looks like someone took pliers or something and twisted the end all up. - thanks

Sounds like the metal has been stretched. It will need to be shrunk to take the waves out. The edge is harder to shrink than a dint. Put a dolly or block of steel at the inside edge of the ripple and gently tap with a body hammer to get the metal to collapse into its self. Putting the dolly directly under the low side of the ripple will help to start with but striking hard can cause more stretching. There is other methods but all take practice or more tools.

I kindof thought that the metal was stretched. Looks like I'll need to learn metal shrinking with a torch - thanks for the advice.

I very seldom use a torch. Off dolly shrinking is not that hard and if you do not have body tools can be done with a block of steel. You can shape the steel to match the curve with an angle grinder or post grinder. file it smooth. You can hold it under the edge ripple to start with but when you get close you move the dolly back to the edge and keep tapping. You can go to youtube and watch it done both ways, off dolly and a torch with cold water. I would never do the edge with a torch though. I have pictures where I have removed weld warp with off dolly but no videos to show how.
