Starter shim stock

Parts store doesn't carry anything so what is a good material to use for shim stock on starters? Would aluminum coil stock/flashing be too soft? Does the stock need to have a light coat of dielectric grease on both sides?

You can by a variety of shim stock from places like McMaster-Carr.

That being said, what starter are you working with that needs shimmimg?

For the common GM units from a while back that needed shimming, factory-made shims are available, and I can't think of any other starters, offhand, that commonly need to be shimmed???
