Media Blasting cabinets

Afternoon all,

Not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but does anyone have a recommendation for a decently priced media blasting cabinet? I've looked at the ones at HF and they seem rather cheap (no surprise since they are made in China)... I've also looked at the one at TS but they get bad reviews. I suppose that any "cheap" cabinet is going to have it's drawbacks, but am curious to what others may think.

Generally, I plan on using it for small parts work (rebuilding my H), so a bench-top model is probably the easiest given the space I've got to work with. I also saw one on a place called Redline (the below link)... seems like a good unit. Anyone use them before?

thanks in advance!

A friend of mine has a fairly large blast cabinet that has been awesome for many things. We even do carburetor in it. If you get one that is big enough to be useful and also with a dust collector which is required for any serious blasting in a cabinet, it will cost you quite a bit. If you don't have a dust collector, you won't be able to see your work after you've used your media a few times.

I have the HF one, and honestly it works fine for my purpose. Only issue I have is not having a good h2o separator so I have some issues with the media feeding properly after running for a bit.

The cabinet and gun are pretty straight forward, not much to much them.

It will need a light source, preferably on the outside to protect it from getting blasted. If you find one with a square corner window it will be cheaper to replace than the round corner glass. Guns and nozzles are generic, but being able to find replacement nozzles is a plus.

Like 87 said, a dust collector is very valuable! Also the quality and quantity of the air is the most important factor. Size your nozzle to your compressor CFM. Dry air is a necessity.

Back in 2004 I bought a "Magnum air" cabinet.
it looks just like the ones Tractor supply,
Napa, and carquest sells. I found an online
special for $180.00

The 12 volt light was very poor. I replaced it
with a 120v flood light. I'm still using the
original bulb. it is inside the cabinet. I've
never broken it yet.
I only use 80 grit glass beads. I have had no
problems with it. I use it about three times a
week. I'm still using the original ceramic
nozzle.I added a water trap to the air supply.

The air nozzle is brass and is wearing out as
is the trigger.

The parts that wear out fast are the lense
protectors and the glooves.

Vision is very important. I use a friend's now and then and the biggest thing is to be able to tell what is clean and what is not. You need light, and the ability to clean the inside of the glass, and dust removal.

I bought a medium sized one from T.P tools and equipment about 15 years ago. the only problem I wish it was bigger. I ran a 2" pvc pipe from the cabinet thru the shop wall to a cheap vacuum cleaner outside this keeps all the dust out of the shop. I clean the filter and empty the vacuum every few days. I get about 7 years out of the vacuum cleaner. The last one I bought was about $36.00

I don't presently have one but use a neighbors TP Tools model on occasion. I know of several folks that have that brand and all are very happy that they bought them. They are made in the USA and TP Tools carry replacement parts which are readily available from their facility in Canfield, Ohio. They may be among the higher cost units ranging in cost between $400 to $1500 with most units supplied with a vacuum system. When I obtain one it will certainly be a TP Tools model, Hal.

I bought a cabinet at HF last year. It works great for my tractor restorations. You need to calk all the seams when you put it together. I added some lights to see better and connected a shop vac to the cabinet to suck out the dust. For under 200 bucks you can't beat it. DB

Most cabinets you find are made in China and about the same quality. Mine is a larger unit with a self contained vacuum & lights. Spent around $1500-1600 and it showed up in a box marked "Made in China" and "Sand Blaste Cabinit" or something like that. Still decent quality and works good.

If you do much blasting at all a vacuum will soon clog or not suck enough to offset the air entering the booth from the air hose. I've done it...but it isn't the greatest.

Another way is to use a fan to pressurize the cabinet & blow the air out an exhaust pipe and outside. Makes a mess outside and I've had to reinforce the plastic doors on the cheaper cabinets to keep them from bowing under pressure but it worked.

The vacuum on my current cabinet is similar to the woodworking dust collectors that harbor freight sells but I've put an Oneida Dust Deputy between the vacuum and cabinet. Before I'd have to clean out the filters every few hours...now it is months instead of hours. Works great!

I bought one from TP tools in 2008. It has been great! I use it often, I don't know how I got along without it.
I bought a Champion 5 horsepower 2 stage air compressor with an 80 gallon tank from TP tools also. Both have been good and as said before, they have all the parts and supplies if needed.
