They use an oddball thermostat (Key #19) that gets inserted into the upper radiator hose near the end that connects to the "nipple" on the cylinder head.

A hose clamp (not overtightened) or a wiretie can b e used to keep it from migrating upward towards the radiator.

The heat-sensitive element goes nearest the cylinder head.
