What is a good rust remover

I have a 1950 Case SO that I need to remove the brake disc from the splined shsft. It is stuck pretty good from rust.Any ideas what to loosen the rust up with? Dick, OR.

Propane torch. Heat it up some to the point you don't want to touch it. Let it cool. The expansion and contraction should break it loose. If there is a seal close by that you would be worried about forget about the heat and use some acetone and tranny fluid mixture for a couple days then sort of puller. It shouldn't be stuck all that bad unless it's been sitting in the elements for years.

If you use heat, apply some candle wax as it cools. Wax seeps between the splines and helps to loosen them.

For rusted items there is a product called "Zepreserve". It comes in a big aerosol can. Zep normally sells it by the case, but in that quantity it's pretty cost prohibitive for individuals. I did find a place online where you can by it by the can. I think there are some sellers on Ebay also that sell individual cans. It ends up being about $10-$12 a can but it's well worth it. A can last a long time and it penetrates rust better than anything on the market. You'll be shocked how well it works. I got some of that from my employer back in the 80's and ran out in the 90's. When I finally found I could get it again, I bought two more cans to keep on the shelf. That was 2 years ago and I still have some in both cans.

There are several options. First there is Kroil which can be purchased at most autoparts stores. The second is a home brew of a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF. This is like oil and water. You have to shake it up good and apply it immediately. This mix works pretty good, but it is a little hard to apply to some parts. I use the Kriol most because it comes in an spray can so you can apply to hard to reach areas. On really stuck stuff I will soak several times over a few days then apply a little heat. I have heard of the candle wax before, but I have not tried it. The most important thing is to have patience. That part has had along time rust itself together so always give it a little time to break loose. Good luck!

I've been mixing my own concoction for a while now. I sprayed it out of a commercial spray bottle that I picked up from a big box store.
I use equal parts of ATF acetone kerosene and old brake fluid.

Multiple Soakings is the trick.

On the farm best we found in a spray is from john deere. Penetrating oil. This stuff works great! If it can be soaked then evapo-rust works great. Kinda expensive but works really good and is non acidic. Can be found at O'Reillys.

I also use ATF and acetone. My problem is I have yet to find a spray bottle that will last for any length of time. Usually the sprayer part will start leaking. It appears that the acetone builds pressure and forces a leak.
What are you guys using.

generally, to work for any length of time you want a sprayer with viton O-rings. Expect to pay about $1.50 more. The viton rings usually will have a green dot on them.
