IH 424 hydraulic problems

The shaft seal on the timing gear-driven hydraulic pump has failed. Maybe the bushings or bearings in the pump, as well.

You didn't state if it was gas or diesel, they take completely different pumps/kits, and there are 2 or three versions for each, once you get it narrowed down to gas or diesel, because of PS or not, etc..

Thank you. I am waiting for the service manual to start the process. It should be here in a few days. My 424 uses gas. I found the numbers yesterday and will start researching. Any advice on the process from here would be great.

As a rule of thumb failure of that seal in any hydraulic pump is caused by the seal wearing and the bushings in the pump causing too much internal leakage in the pump. This leakage which is more than normal leakage will cause the oil to be forced past the front pump seal. When you have the pump apart inspect the suction side of the pump for wear caused by the pump gears tracking in the center part of the pump.

Many gear pumps I've worked on that had the front seal blowing out suffered from scoring on the flat area between the gear-face and end-housing face. It is that flat metal-to-metal contact area that stops high pressure oil from getting to the seal area. With some pumps it is the only thing that separates the high pressure oil from the seal area. Some others have replaceable thrust plates and seals.

(quoted from post at 12:58:21 12/28/14) Many gear pumps I've worked on that had the front seal blowing out suffered from scoring on the flat area between the gear-face and end-housing face. Thanks again. I will take your advice and really look at the pump. I will keep you posted.
