Hello I am the proud owner of a 1979 Case 580 B extendahoe backhoe.
I bought this machine at a fair price I have done a complete fluid swap on the tractor as well as filters.
It won't move when it's cold until it warms up and in the summer months it won't move when the machine gets hot.

It makes a real whining sound at my feet once it warms up almost sounds like the oil pump in the torque tube
Any help would be appreciated thanks

What drive system does it have?? I have a friend who has a 580B but his has a clutch and a 4 speed with a forward reverse so if is a gear drive but yours sounds more like a hydrostat drive

Some of those have a torque convertor in them and if that is going bad it will cause a problem like your having

Very common problem with this machine. It either has
a rockford or a twin disc foreward and reverse
clutch pack. You need to check the pump pressure. The
pump pressure is low. The clutch packs are worn out
or the torque tube is worn and the pressure is by
passing the sealing rings on the clutch pack. You
need a Case service manual and some gauges to find
your problem.

I am no expert on the YELLOW IRON but i did get conned into doing a 580B . As to how it acted when really cold i can not tell ya on that as it was summer when it came to me , When cold it would go forward but when it warmed up there was no go forward and the guy drove it backwards five miles to the shop. He got handled by the seller and paid top price for a plum junk machine . I was able to get a service manual to use and aftr doing all the test it came down to the shuttle , the forward clutches were TOAST , OH and guess what Case told me that they were not serviced anymore along with some hard parts i needed to replace . BUT they did have a shuttle unit that you could install but it was for a 580B tractor WITH PTO you had to drive in several soft plugs to seal lube oil ports and something else don't remember as this was 16-17 years ago . I can tell ya this that the unit was 4700 bucks and change plus the labor and other pieces and parts I really felt bad for the guy as he got hammered on the deal . The plus side is that he still has it and it is still working as i saw him a couple weeks ago working it . No it is NOT a fun job to split them to get at it . That job just reminded me why i don't work on YELLOW IRON .

Well geeze thanks for all of the ideas I wonder where I can get the gauges I already have the service manual so that's a plus
I was kind of hoping that it was only a case of changing out the forward and reverse valve on top of the torque tube worst case change the oil pump in the torque tube
This machine will drive down the road pretty fairly just wondering if I may be on the right track

I have not worked on on one of these older Cases in
a long time. I have a 586 C and the shuttle is a
piece of cake on these. Comes out just like a 2WD
pickup transmission, but years ago I just about
pulled my hair out on these old B's and CKs. My
suggestion is to get rid of that boat anchor and get
a newer machine. You can spend 5 grand on it if you want to but you still have an old poorly designed machine.PS You will never keep brakes on it either.

Just wondering if any one has changed the pump out in the torque tube and how big of a job is that an afternoon or is it a split the tractor job

I binged 580B reman power shuttle and Broken Tractor has one listed for $2550. We have a580E with the shuttle sitting on the work bench. That machine has been pretty good except for a weak shuttle. If it was left in low when in use it was fine but during snow pushing it was run in a higher gear. Greg

There is a complete shuttle on ebay now for $1800. Or if you want to rebuild yours don't believe CNH that the parts are NLA. A rebuild kit is $400.00 on ebay. Case doesn't build anything but the case. Other manufacturers make the parts and you can buy them from various places.
