I have a Farmall 100 with a cracked block. The tractor is in good shape. From what I have herd they were bad about cracking near the front of the block because the front end bolts to the bock. Can the block be welded if I tare it down?

Some pictures would be helpful.

Generally speaking, welded cast is not going to be as strong as the casting was before it broke. It is a very difficult process to do right, few people know how, few are willing to take the time and chance, knowing the end result could still be a failure. Then there are those who will claim they can fix it, take your money, let you spend more money putting it back together, only to be disappointed.

A lot would also depend on how it broke, how it got broke, and what the future use will be.

We use the tractor in spring and summer for our garden. The crack came from just general use. From what I've been told these tractors were bad for cracking in this area because the entire front end bolts to the block on the right side. Right now it just leaks a very small amount of oil. I'm afraid that over time it will get worse. The crack is on the right side at the front from the oil pan up.

I think we have right around 15 or 16 of the 100, 130, 140 tractors, both regular and high clearance, only 6 or 7 actually get used on a regular basis. Some are ag and some are industrial wit the heavy duty front axle. I've never seen one cracked at the front like that, but I can see how it could happen during a pull start or improperly tied down during transit.

If it was a difficult to find engine I would consider welding it, but the C-123 were used in lots of tractors and equipment. You will have to check casting numbers, but an engine out of a Super C, 200, 230 should fit, not to meantion Super A's, another 100, or 130. A 140 engine would fit too, but the water pump and fan are one unit and it uses one belt vs 2 on the earlier engines. I know my brother has a couple of C113's out of Super A's he's parted out and I think has one or two C123's either still in or out of 200 or Super C's that's he's parted as well.
