Head bolt and head gasket leaking issues on AC G Tractor

I just finished restoring an Allis Chalmers model G tractor and wanted to make a comment about a problem we had with head bolt and head gasket leaks after the engine was rebuilt. It was on a 48 and the cooling system was apparently not well maintained.

The head was not put on by the engine rebuilder so I had to do it. During the process, I found the head bolts tended to leak which wasn't very nice because of corroded threads in the block. Eventually, I had to replace all of the bolts with threw passageway into the water jacket with studs. I J-B Welded them in.

Also, the coolant tended to leak out between the block and the head at the gasket so eventually I had to remove the head and put on another head gasket. The Fel-Pro gasket instructions say to put it on dry but I found out that wasn't a good idea. The second time, it was sprayed with Permatex Hi-Tack and the bolts and nuts were lubed and torqued to 40 foot pounds. According to a more experience Tech at Fel-Pro, sometimes the older fiber or composite gaskets need to be sprayed with a sealant.
